The short answer: a loan reminder voicebot is an AI voice agent that calls borrowers before and on their EMI due date, confirms payment readiness or auto-debit status, records a promise-to-pay (PTP) date when they cannot pay now, and sends an instant UPI payment link by SMS or WhatsApp. It is legal in India because reminder calls on an existing loan are transactional communication, exempt from DND/NCPR screening — provided the call stays strictly about the loan, runs inside the permitted hours and keeps auditable logs. Below are seven scripts you can deploy as-is, with the exact calling windows and capture fields.
A reminder call is the highest-ROI call in lending: it prevents delinquency instead of chasing it. It is also the lowest-compliance-risk workflow on an NBFC phone desk, which is why we recommend automating it first (see the full workflow breakdown in our NBFC voice bot guide).
Calling hours for EMI reminder calls: RBI vs. TRAI
| Rule | Window | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| TRAI permitted hours (promotional/UCC) | 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM | Marketing and sales outreach |
| RBI recovery-agent conduct guidelines | 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM | Collections and recovery calls |
| Transactional exemption (DND does not block) | Any hour, within normal service windows | Reminders on an existing loan relationship |
An EMI reminder sits in the transactional band: the customer has an account, and the content is limited to that account. In practice most lenders schedule reminders 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM, which satisfies every rule at once — inside the RBI collection window, inside the TRAI window, and squarely transactional. Two discipline rules keep the exemption intact: never pivot a reminder into a cross-sell pitch for the same borrower during the call, and treat any call regarding an overdue EMI (DPD 1-30) under the RBI recovery-conduct rules, not the marketing rules. The full regulatory boundary is in our TRAI and DND compliance guide.
The 7 loan reminder voicebot scripts
All scripts are written in polite Hinglish (Devanagari for the Hindi phrases so text-to-speech pronounces them natively), confirm the borrower identity, state the lender, and end cleanly. A reminder call should stay under 90 seconds when the borrower pays or promises; only the hardship flow runs longer.
Script 1 — Pre-due reminder (3 days before auto-debit date)
Goal: confirm sufficient balance so the auto-debit (NACH/e-mandate) does not bounce.
"Namaste! Main Vistara Capital ki taraf se bol rahi hoon. Rahul ji, aapka loan account *1234 ka EMI ₹8,400 12 tarikh ko auto-debit hoga. Kya aapke account mein balance sufficient hai?" — Confirm "haan ji" → log SUCCESS, balance_confirmed=true, no payment link needed. Confirm "nahi" → go to Script 4 (payment link flow, pre-empting the bounce). No answer → retry later same day; three consecutive no-answers suppress the number for the cycle and fall back to an SMS.
Script 2 — Due-date-day reminder (manual payment mode)
Goal: same-day confirmation before standing instructions fire or manual payment is expected.
"Rahul ji, namaste. Aaj aapke loan ki EMI due hai — ₹8,400. Kagi payment ho chuki hai? Kyonki agar nahi, toh main abhi ek payment link bhej doon WhatsApp par?" — Paid → log PAID, call ends. Not paid → offer the WhatsApp link, wait for the "bhejie" confirmation, log link_sent=true.
Script 3 — Payment-link delivery call (UPI)
Goal: borrower agrees to pay by link; call is short and transactional.
"Main aapke WhatsApp number 98765-43210 par ₹8,400 ka instant UPI link bhej rahi hoon. Link par tap karke aap GPay, PhonePe ya kisi bhi UPI app se pay kar sakte hain, 2 minute mein. Payment hone ke baad aapko SMS par receipt mil jayegi." — After the call, SMS fires with the link; the webhook marks link_clicked and payment_status back into the LMS. Capture: link_sent, link_clicked, amount_paid.
Script 4 — Promise-to-pay (PTP) capture
Goal: borrower cannot pay today; lock a firm date.
"Samajh sakta hoon Rahul ji. Is month keduyat ko saath baden — kya main aapke loan account mein is EMI ka ek promise date note kar doon? Sabse pehleस friday theek hai ya agli Monday?" — The agent reads back the exact agreed date: "Theek hai, 17 tarikh note kiya. 17 ko main yaad bhi dila dungi aur link bhi bhej dungi." Capture: ptp_date, ptp_call_id. The PTP auto-generates a fresh reminder call on the promised date.
Script 5 — Broken promise follow-up (PTP date passed)
Goal: gently re-open the commitment; one soft call only, then escalate tone nowhere.
"Rahul ji, 17 tarikh ka aapka commitment tha, aur aaj us date se do din guzar gaye. Kya payment ho gayi? Ya kisi adjustment ki wajah se ho paya nahi?" — Paid → clears. Honest reason → one fresh PTP (maximum one per cycle). No commitment → log no_ptp, flag for the next DPD-bucket playbook (see our loan collection voicebot playbook).
Script 6 — Auto-debit bounce alert
Goal: the NACH mandate failed this morning; act the same day while intent is high.
"Rahul ji, aaj subah aapke account se ₹8,400 ki EMI debit nahi ho paayi — shayad balance kam tha ya account temporarily hold mein tha. Kya abhi balance daal dijiye, main dobara skip karva deti hoon? Ya payment link bhejoon?" — Capture: bounce_reason, retry_link_sent. Same-day action on a bounce has the highest save-rate of any reminder touch.
Script 7 — Hardship escalation to a human agent
Goal: recognize financial distress, never negotiate, transfer or log for a human.
"Aapki situation ke liye maaf kijiye. Main aapki baat ko note kar rahi hoon, aur our loan officer aapko aaj hi contact karenge jo aapke liye options bata payenge — installment schedule ya RBI ke bharose wale guidance. Aapka number 98765-43210 hai na?" — Trigger on keywords of job loss, medical emergency, dispute, "rehmi shikayat", or explicit "do not call me again". The agent never reschedules, threatens, or discusses the debt with anyone answering other than the borrower. Capture: hardship_flag, transfer_completed.
What the voicebot must capture on every call
- Identity and consent — borrower confirmed, correct account readback.
- Outcome code — paid / balance_confirmed / link_sent / ptp_date / bounce_reason / hardship_flag / no-answer.
- Compliance fields — timestamp, duration, CLI used, transcript, recording — all retained for RBI audit.
- Write-back — every outcome posted to the LMS/CRM via API or webhook the moment the call ends, so the next message (SMS, link, retry) keys off one source of truth.
Timing cadence that works
| Touch | When | Channel |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-due balance check | EMI date − 5 and − 3 days | Voicebot (Script 1) |
| Due-day confirmation | EMI date, 10 AM–12 PM | Voicebot (Script 2) |
| Due-day payment link | EMI date, on not-paid | Voicebot (Script 3) + WhatsApp |
| Bounce follow-up | Mandate-failure day, same day | Voicebot (Script 6) |
| PTP reminder | On the promised date | Voicebot (Script 1 variant) |
| Broken promise | PTP date + 2 days | Voicebot (Script 5), then bucket playbook |
Borrowers who receive the pre-due cadence typically never enter delinquency — the goal of a reminder program is that the collector plays under 5% of the book, not the whole book. When accounts do slip, hand them to the DPD-bucket playbook.
Compliance guardrails baked in
- Window enforcement — the platform queues every reminder 10 AM–7 PM; anything queued outside rolls to the next allowed slot automatically.
- Transactional discipline — script content limited to the loan; no cross-sell inside a reminder call.
- Privacy — the debt is never discussed with anyone other than the borrower, even a spouse who picks up.
- Opt-out honored instantly — "mat call karna" ends the call and adds the number to the internal do-not-call list for future cycles.
