Confirms the Address, Not Just the Order
Reading the address back catches the typos and missing landmarks that cause a large share of failed deliveries.
COD to Prepaid Conversion
A small discount offered on the verification call converts a share of COD orders to prepaid, which removes the RTO risk entirely.
Cash on delivery is what makes Indian e-commerce work and what makes it expensive. A COD order carries no commitment, so a share of them are placed impulsively, entered with a wrong address, or simply refused at the door. The parcel travels both ways, the shipping is paid twice, and the product comes back needing re-inspection.
A verification call before dispatch is the single highest-return intervention available to a D2C brand, and it works because it does two things at once: it filters out the orders that were never going to convert, and it fixes the address errors that turn genuine orders into failed deliveries.
What the Verification Call Should Actually Do
Most COD verification calls are treated as a yes-or-no confirmation. That wastes the call. Four distinct things can be accomplished in under a minute.
- Confirm intent — Was the order genuine and is the customer still expecting it. This catches impulse and accidental orders before shipping.
- Verify the address out loud — Read it back, including the landmark. Address errors are a substantial share of delivery failures and are trivially fixable at this point.
- Confirm availability — Whether someone will be there to receive it, and offer an alternative window if not.
- Offer prepaid conversion — A small incentive to pay now. Every converted order removes the RTO risk completely rather than reducing it.
- Cancel cleanly when the answer is no — An order cancelled before dispatch costs almost nothing. The same order shipped and refused costs both legs plus handling.
Timing matters here more than in most use cases. The call needs to happen before the order enters the packing queue, which usually means within the hour rather than the next morning.
Recovering Abandoned Carts Without Being a Nuisance
Cart abandonment calls are more sensitive than order verification, because the customer has not committed to anything. The line between helpful and intrusive is narrower.
- Only call high-value carts — Calling every abandoned cart is not economic and is not welcome. Set a value threshold and hold to it.
- Wait a few hours, not minutes — Calling within minutes of abandonment feels like surveillance. A gap makes the call read as service rather than tracking.
- Lead with a reason, not a pitch — Checking whether they had a problem completing the order works considerably better than pushing them to buy.
- Ask what stopped them — Payment failure, delivery charge, out-of-stock variant. The aggregate answer to this is frequently worth more than the recovered carts.
- Call once — One attempt. A cart is not a lead and repeated calls generate complaints quickly.
- Honour opt-outs immediately — Suppress globally across every campaign, not just cart recovery.
